Events for March 18, 2010

  • "Alaska - The Great Land" talk Moultonborough
The Loon Center in Moultonborough, the Lakes Region Chapter of the Audubon Society of New Hampshire will sponsor a program titled "ALASKA - The Great Land" presented by naturalist Bob Quinn on Thursday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited; admission is free. There is no place like Alaska on our continent. More superlatives apply to it than any other state. It is so big that if it were divided in half, each half would still be bigger than Texas. Quinn, a naturalist and birder, will take us on a tour of the state, with the focus on a three week hiking and canoe trip in the wild Brooks Range of northern Alaska. Glacier Bay, Katmai, and Denali are some of the other settings, and grizzly bears, caribou, bald eagles, ptarmigan, glaciers, and volcanoes are some of the characters. Quinn is a New Hampshire native who has done bird-watching throughout 49 states. He worked for the New Hampshire Audubon Society for nine years and continues as an active volunteer. With his business, Merlin Enterprises, he has led dozens of field trips throughout the world. The Loon Center is located on Lee's Mill Road; follow the signs from Route 109 or from Route 25 near the Moultonborough Central School. Refreshments will be served.

  • Business After Hours
Join the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce and LRGHealthcare for their Business After Hours at "Caring for Women" in their new facility at 734 Main St., Laconia from 5-7 pm. This new facility will offer OB/GYN, midwifery, and primary care for women; consultation and care for menopause issues; incontinence care and treatment; Digital Mammography; ultrasound and non-stress tests; bone density testing; counseling for women; and women's health education services. For an appointment with any of our providers, call 527-1855 today! RSVP: 603-524-5531

  • Kevine Sperl presents 30 Days - 30 Images
Kevin Sperl, local photographer and publisher of Lakes Region Spirit Magazine will be at the Meredith Public Library at 7PM to present his 30 Days-30 Images Project. For 30 days, starting on January 22, Kevin set out to take a single image a day capturing a special event, person or place in the Lakes Region. Kevin wrote the following: "My motivation is simple. Express my visual interpretation of the Lakes Region to let people know they need not travel to get good images. Each photograph represents some aspect of photography and I intend to include technical, compositional and artistic aspects of each image." You are invited to come hear Kevin speak about the photos as he provides technical details of each along with his thought process and compositional approach. Come see why taking photos in your own back yard can be just as rewarding, and significantly less expensive, than traveling to some far-flung location where you think the photography is better.

  • Richard Clark is "Atticus"
This compelling one man theatrical event will feature the courtroom drama, poignant interactions between father and children, and the harsh realities of bigotry and hatred that were so memorably portrayed in Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. Travel back to 1930s Alabama to meet this loving father, compassionate friend and uncompromising attorney who remains an iconic fictional figure 50 years after he was created. Admission is free. For more information, call 524-4775 x11
